San Diego Outrigger Canoe Club (SDOCC) was founded in 1983 by Ex-Navy Seal Dee VanWinkle, and very quickly emerged as one of the most prominent Outrigger Canoe Clubs located on Mission Bay, San Diego, California. After finding himself back on mainland California, Dee discovered Outrigger Canoe Racing and decided that this was the sport for him. With the mindset of going out there to compete, but have a lot of fun along the way, Dee found five other guys who shared his passion and drive, and SDOCC was born!
SDOCC has now developed into one of the most diverse clubs on Mission Bay, with members originating from not only San Diego County, but from all over America, Europe and the rest of the world. While our team consists of men and women whose ability level ranges from Olympic class athletes, to the recreational paddler, we all share the same love and passion for the sport of Outrigger Canoe Racing and enjoy coming together, as a family to have fun. Nothing is better than a fourteen to twenty mile race in the warm California sun and surf with your friends. SDOCC is always looking for fun, team-oriented people and will welcome individuals of all experiences, abilities and ages to come out and experience Outrigger Canoe Racing.
SDOCC is a member of the Southern California Outrigger Racing Association (SCORA) and as well as sending teams to compete in all SCORA races up and down the coast of California, SDOCC prides itself on having a strong representation in races in Hawaii as well as races over mainland America. Outrigger Canoeing is rapidly becoming the most competitive water sport along the west coast, with 29 clubs in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada as well as 17 in Northern California, and since all divisions are available for both men and women, Outrigger Canoe racing is one of a few totally co-ed water sports available.
